This typical Campethera species inhabits a wide variety of woodlands in sub-saharan Africa, mainly south of the equator. It occurs in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zaire, Angola, Namibia and South Africa, with isolated populations elsewhere including Senegambia. Six races are recognised.
